Cast
glass is a very effective material for many architectural applications.
Its dimensional surface provides a textured finish and visual obscurity
while providing for light transmission.
The most expensive part of the process is the production of the molds
used to cast the glass. To achieve economy one mold is used to cast
each piece of glass. As a result each piece of glass is the same overall
texture, which may not be the most desirable appearance for some applications.
To address this issue, Architectural Glass Art, Inc. has developed
the Modular Mold System, which allows designers the
opportunity to create custom designs at a standard price.
In the Modular Mold System the molds used to cast the glass are composed
of several smaller, individual molds, or modules. The system allows
for the introduction of multiple textures within one piece of glass
as well as for the introduction of colors in different areas of a
composition. One of the most important features of the system is the
introduction of a linear graphic element, which is the space between
the individual modules. This introduces another design element that
creates both a rhythm and establishes an overall organizing pattern
for all the adjacent glass panels.
